AVG 8.0 Slowdown

I posted awhile ago asking about what Anti-Virus to buy, with AVg shutting down updates for version 7.5 early July and forcing users to upgrade to 8.0 if they want to keep their computer secure.

Well I updated to 8.0 Free anyways and noticed almost right away a significant slow down in the time it takes my computer to start up. Now, I know I don't have a fantastic machine, but it works pretty damn well usually and I do have a decent enough computer to surf, play most videos (except my video card can't handle HD stuff), and run the Sims 2 without any problems, so I don't mind. But anything that hogs memory gets put in my black book (like MegaUpload's unavoiudable and somewhat intrusive flash and pop-up ads).

Well folks, AVG Free 8.0 is out. It takes well over 2 hours to scan my computer which is almost an hour up from 7.5 and it's riddled with annoying "Upgrade to our pay shit!" notifications. Plus the aforementioned start up slowdown. What am I switching to? Avira AntiVir Personal. Free, with a rootkit scanner! Light on memory with shorter scan times too.

So anyone else using 8.0 with an older computer and experiencing slowdowns?

Nope. But I've got a better computer than I used to, so I can't say how much is the computer, how much is the program.

I can say that it's never locked up completely, which 7.5 did about half the time time at the end.

Hmmm... I never had that problem with 7.5. It always scanned cleanly.

8.0 has never locked up my computer, but it did slow things down quite a bit, as I said. Enough for me to notice, at least. At startup especially. Right now Avira AntiVir is running. Not too bad so far. After I uninstalled AVG 8.0 my startup went back to normal.

Hmm, I wonder if thats why my laptop takes forever. I did have issues with AVG 8 and my 2007 office. For some reason it was blocking .docs and wouldn't open them or let Office open anything. Uninstalled AVG and reinstalled it and it seemed to work. I'm gonna take a look at what you recommend Susan, cause my laptop is annoying slow to start, and yeah I got Vista, but 3gb of memory should be enough to start it quicker.
