Vista...

New postby Typedink on Sat Apr 26, 2008 4:13 am

Ok so who other than me has been using this? I had no choice, it came with my laptop. Sure its pretty but thats about it. I HATE the new scrolling thing for the programs in start menu. HATE.

I hate that every time I want to do something I have to ALLOW the comp to do it. I hate that like 95% of the time my task bar notification icons, like volume, network, battery icons disappear. I have to end explorer.exe and re-start it in task manager.

So I wonder who else is being overly annoyed with Vista? Any good tweaks? Recommendations to make it more bearable?

I got my wife a laptop at christmas and it came with Vista... there are some features I like... but on the whole its horrid - overly colourful, overly helpful and generally a pain in the bum. It needs loads of tweaking to get it from how it is defaultly configured to being semi-usable...

I got annoyed with the frequently popping up confirmation dialog window to asking for permissions to continue a task too. I found how to disable it...

Control Panel > User accounts
disable UAC

Do a google on this and you'll find limitless numbers of people who are annoyed with Vista.

The solution?

INSTALL XP.

Or find someone who can do it for you.

See I thought of installing XP BUT to finally have a legit version of Windows that I can update with no hassle on my laptop is what keeps me from putting XP on it cause it sure wouldn't be legit.

Thanks for the tip Eggie!

I've been using Vista since January and I'm a fan. No problems that I wasn't expecting, such as UAC, altered Start Menu and Explorer layout. I got used to them after a week or so (disabled UAC immediately), grew to PREFER the scrolling start menu and modified Explorer to my needs. Now I'm loving it.

Of course, I rarely actually use my start button. The only reason I even use the task bar anymore is because the system tray is so good. I use Object Dock to access tasks and apps.

edit: Oh, another thing. Use ctrl+shift+esc instead of ctrl alt del. Takes you right to the task manager.
